Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Every day during this month, Muslims around the world spend the daylight hours in a complete fast.

During Ramadan, every part of the body must be restrained. The tongue must be restrained from backbiting and gossip. The eyes must restrain themselves from looking at unlawful things. The hand must not touch or take anything that does not belong to it. The ears must refrain from listening to idle talk or obscene words. The feet must refrain from going to sinful places. In such a way, every part of the body observes the fast.(source)

A boy performed Friday prayers on a fence during an anti-government rally in San’a, Yemen. The reason why I am sharing this photograph is to let everyone know (specially Muslims who don’t offer prayer) that offering prayer is “must” in Islam and this photograph shows that no matter wherever you are – you can offer prayer if you really want to.

Muharram, The Festival Of Flagellation

The Muslim world this past week observed Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar. The 10th day of Muharram is Ashura, when Shi’ite Muslims mourn the death of the grandson of the Prophent Mohammed. Very devout Shi’ites cut and whip themselves into a bloody froth in observance. Here are photos of Ashura from Pakistan, India and Afghanistan.

Inspiring Photos of Hajj & Eid-al-Adha 2011

Hajj is the largest annual gathering of humanity. Millions of Muslims from around the world perform Hajj in Saudi Arabia. It is a religious duty that every able-bodied Muslim who can affort it must take at least once in their lifetime.

Hajj is followed by the celebrations of the three-day festival of Eid-al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, which symbolized Abrahaam’s willingness to sacrifice his son. Here are photographs of Hajj and Eid-al-Adha 2011 from all over the world.
