Featherless Chicken

Featherless Chicken

An Israeli geneticist, Avigdor Cahaner, created the world’s first featherless chicken at the genetics faculty at the Rehovot Agronomy Institute near Tel Aviv, Israel. The bare-skinned bird was created by cross breeding a broiler with a species that has a featherless neck.

The idea behind the development of this naked bird is that it will create a more ‘convenient’ and energy efficient chicken which can live in warm countries where feathered chickens don’t do well and cooling systems are too expensive to be commonly affordable. And of course, the bird doesn’t require plucking, saving additional money in processing plants.

  1. The poor little things! They look so strange. However, as raising and killing your own chickens for food is commonplace when we go to visit family in Colombia, I have to admit that not having to pick off all the feathers is appealing : )

  2. Amazing. I’ve heard that Paleontologist Jack Horner is seeking to reverse engineer a chicken into a mini dinosaur. Looking at the legs, arms and neck, I can really envision a chickenosaurus. The red coloring helps a lot too. I wonder if dinosaurs had similar fleshy combs, especially the little ones.

    1. REally, dinosaurs chicken size DID have feathers. Their differences are teeth, long tail and clawed 3-fingered hands.

  3. Animal cruelty! Chickens without feathers means NO protection from mosquitoes, ants, gnats, bugs, centipedes, dirt, mud, and on factory farms – poop pee pustules mucus ecoli. Natural mating will also be difficult as the rooster will injure then bare-skinned hen with his sharp beak and claws. Once perceived as injured, she will be “cast out” by her flock or worse, attacked. All this simply so people don’t have to pluck feathers. I feel sorry for these birds, being plucked before their time for some human curiosity! If these scientists truly want to help 3rd world countries on labor & natural resources, they should all be clothes-free themselves. That’ll save on resources like energy, water, labor, and material like those that are used to create clothing, wash & maintain them.

  4. Funny how freakish and ugly man’s creation is and how varied and grand God’s. this bird looks like a sick mutant….poor creature.
